Culture Box: Child Prodigies

A child prodigy is a child who does something as well as an adult — sometimes better. They are rare, and they are not new. The one you are about to read about is only the latest.
Mozart was writing his own music at a keyboard like this before he was six.
Fischer learned the game at six from a booklet that came in the box.
Mozart (1756–1791)

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was playing the keyboard at three and writing his own music at five. By six his father was taking him round the courts of Europe to perform. He had written more than 600 works when he died at 35.

Yehudi Menuhin (1916–1999)

Menuhin was born in New York and gave his first solo concert at seven. At twelve he played in Berlin with one of the great orchestras of Europe. He later settled in Britain, was knighted, and opened a school for young musicians.

Bobby Fischer (1943–2008)

Fischer learned chess at six. He won the United States championship at fourteen and became the youngest grandmaster in the world at fifteen. In 1972 he was world champion.

Alma Deutscher (born 2005)

Alma is British. She was playing the piano and the violin at three, composing at four, and had written a full-length opera before she was twelve. She is a prodigy of our own time — and she says she dislikes the word.

Menuhin asked for a violin for his fourth birthday. He got a toy one, and cried.
Two hundred and fifty years after Mozart, prodigies are still writing operas.

Flynn McGarry: the Mozart of the Kitchen

Published: 19 June 2016
A young chef plating a dish on a stainless-steel worktop
_____ _____ _____ _____ _____
_____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____
_____ _____ _____ _____
He's the 17-year-old culinary wunderkind who stepped into the kitchen aged 10 and never looked back. Flynn McGarry has cooked at the White House, been on the cover of The New York Times Magazine and worked side-by-side with the world's top chefs, and now the "Mozart of the kitchen" is headed to MasterChef Australia.
_____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____
At only 17 years old you've been named amongst Time Magazine's '25 Most Influential Teens' two years in a row – how do you balance that success with a typical teenage life?
_____ _____ _____ _____
_____ _____ _____ _____ _____
_____ _____ _____ _____
Unfortunately and not unfortunately, you can't really balance those things while doing what I do. I have focused really intensely on food and haven't had much of a balance between my professional and personal lives. I'm kind of consumed by my job but I love it so much that it doesn't really feel like I'm missing out on anything.
_____ _____
_____ _____ _____
You jumped in the kitchen when you were 10 years old. What got you excited about cooking at such a young age?
_____ _____ _____
_____ _____ _____ _____
_____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____
_____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____
_____ _____
I kind of got into food in a non-serious way at first. I became interested because my mom wasn't the greatest cook [laughs]. She took me to buy a cook book and, being 10 years old, I picked out the one that was wrapped in plastic on the top shelf. At that time I just thought food was stuff to fill you up but that book showed that it was an art form, a refined skill. Ever since then I've been hooked.
_____ _____ _____
How important are the Internet, social media and YouTube to you and your career?
_____ _____ _____
_____ _____ _____ _____
_____ _____ _____
_____ _____ _____ _____
Very important! I mean, it's a way to learn. I have learnt a lot of cooking techniques just by watching YouTube videos. It's also important for me to show my followers what I'm doing. It's really cool for people to see my food as opposed to just reading about it [in a recipe].
_____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____
With such a strong following on social media, do you have any advice for other young people looking to get into cooking or the culinary world?
_____ _____
_____ _____ _____ _____ _____
_____ _____
_____ _____ _____ _____
_____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____
It's not an easy world. Loving cooking and food is obviously the first thing you have to have, but you need to understand that it's going to be very difficult. Being really young makes it even harder. People will dismiss you just because of your age so you have to work that much harder. Like anything, it's about determination but at the same time, enjoy it because if you don't then the really long hours and the really stressful hot kitchens will just become miserable.

Grammar Kit: Le présent Have + participe passé

  • L'auxiliaire Have est au présent : have ou has.

Flynn McGarry has cooked at the White House, been on the cover of The New York Times Magazine and worked side-by-side with the world's top chefs.

  • Affirmatif : sujet + have / has + participe passé
  • Négatif : sujet + haven't / hasn't + participe passé
  • Interrogatif : Have / Has + sujet + participe passé ?

At 14, Flynn has worked as the head chef at a fancy restaurant.

I haven't had much of a balance between my professional and personal lives.

Has he cooked at the White House?

A-t-il cuisiné à la Maison-Blanche ?

Prétérit ou présent Have + p. passé ?

Le participe passé se forme comme suit :

  • Verbes réguliers : infinitif + -ed (cooked, worked) — identique au prétérit.
  • Verbes irréguliers : une forme particulière, à apprendre (been, learnt, done).

Flynn started cooking for his family at 10.

At 14, Flynn has already worked as the head chef at a fancy restaurant.

Flynn McGarry has already cooked at the White House.

Flynn McGarry a déjà cuisiné à la Maison-Blanche.

Flynn McGarry a started (start) cooking for his family when he was 10. His mother b wasn't (not / be) the greatest cook, so she c took (take) him to buy a cook book.
La charpente de ta première phrase : … has been named … because …
Pour relier ta raison : because, so, that is why.

Game: 17 and Already a Chef!

Two to eight teams. Give your team a name, then roll the dice and your piece moves. Look at the symbol on the square you land on, take a card from that deck and do what it says. If your answer is right, you stay where you are. If it is wrong, you go back to the square you came from. A ladder takes you up, a snake takes you down. The first team to land exactly on 30 wins.
[Differentiation hint in English — the rule of thumb that unlocks the hardest deck]

London-based Gaurika Singh making waves for Nepal at Rio Olympics at the tender age of 13

A young swimmer at the side of a competition pool

Gaurika Singh’s Olympics lasted precisely one minute, 8.45 seconds. She came 31st out of 34 competitors attempting to qualify for the 100 metres backstroke. No sooner than it began, it was over. But never mind. It is unlikely to be her last experience of elite competition. After all, she is only 13 years old. If she retired in 2032 after competing in the next four Olympics, she would still be just 29.

“What an amazing experience,” she said after her race had finished, as she faced up to a significant media scrum at the side of the Olympic pool. “I can’t believe it’s happening.”

Singh is easily the youngest athlete in these Games. She was born in 2002. […] She attends Haberdashers’ Aske’s, the renowned private girls’ school in Elstree. It is clearly a school with a talented entry. When she was asked what her classmates made of her sporting prowess, Singh smiled. “My friends are really happy for me but they are also good at stuff. One of my best friends plays Matilda in the West End and another one went to junior Wimbledon.” After the games, she is going to Nepal, to have a holiday.

It will be an emotional return for her. The last time she was in Kathmandu was to swim in the national swimming championships last April. While she was there, she and her mother and brother were caught up in the earthquake that killed 9000 people and left hundreds of thousands homeless. She escaped injury after her mother pushed her under a table. Shocked by the devastation she witnessed, she has subsequently donated all her competitive winnings to the earthquake relief fund.
