Every August, the streets of London come alive for the Notting Hill Carnival — one of the biggest street festivals in the world.

When and where

The Notting Hill Carnival takes place every August in three areas of west London: Notting Hill, Chelsea and Portobello. It is the most famous carnival in Britain.

Three days of celebration

The carnival lasts three days. People dance and listen to non-stop music in the streets, and dancers parade in colourful, exotic costumes.

The sound of steelbands

A steelband is a musical group that plays on metal drums called steel drums. Steelbands are one of the most popular attractions of the carnival.

A family weekend

On Sunday, the first day of the carnival, the streets are reserved for children and families. Everyone can enjoy the music and the parade safely.
