Rugby

Rugby is a game played on a field called a ‘pitch‘. Two teams with 15 players each try to earn points by getting the ball across the opponent’s goal line (GIF 1) or kicking it over the crossbar between the goal posts (GIF 2). A player may carry, pass, or kick the ball.

pitch = terrain

team = équipe

goal line = ligne de but

crossbar = barre transversale

goal posts = poteaux de but

carry = porter

The Basic Rules of Rugby

Take your copy of The Basic Rules of Rugby. Read the text and highlight:

  • the name of the sport in yellow
  • where the sport is played in green
  • information about who plays rugby in pink
  • the objective of the game in blue

Now, underline:

  • You have to kick a ball made of cheese. 
  • You must have a chicken and some cheese on your head all the time.
  • You must touch your ear with your finger all the time, or you are disqualified.
  • You mustn’t let the chicken eat the cheese.
  • You can give the chicken a name.
  • You must wear your favourite colour.
  • If you don’t have a favourite colour, you can’t play.
  • You can’t touch your chicken.
  • You must sing ‘Chicken-cheese, chicken-cheese cheese cheese…’ if you have the ball.
  • You can play next to a KFC.
