No need for new toys, we have Team Repair

We spoke to Anaïs Engelmann and Megan Hale from Team Repair. They run a 12-month fixing programme that could be a perfect gift for any young person in your life.

Starting fixers young

The team of Team Repair is composed of five design-engineering graduates who are linked by their passion for reducing e-waste. Their company aims to introduce and teach children about repair and sustainability, each month sending them a new gadget to fix.

These gadgets include hand-held game consoles and remote-controlled cars — it's such a fresh and engaging approach to capturing children’s minds.

Anaïs and Megan explain to us how they came to repair at different stages of their lives, proving that it is never the wrong time to learn these crucial skills. They believe that getting children interested in repair early is integral to inspiring our next generation of fixers and repair-friendly designers.

Another lovely aspect of the Team Repair model is encouraging generational skill sharing. Whether it is parents helping their children with the repair kits, or Team Repair themselves going into schools. At Restart, we recognise how important this skill sharing is in teaching younger people and also not letting this knowledge be lost to time.

Building in circularity

They tell us how a key feature of their project is building circularity into their work. It is not necessarily a popular approach with investors but Team Repair recognise the importance of this aspect of their work. In an effort to solve the issue of e-waste, it only makes sense to reuse the gadgets that they send out.

Their hope is that by educating children on repair and waste reduction, these skills will come in handy when Right to Repair legislation also moves forwards in the coming years. It’s a hope that we definitely share and are working towards making a reality all the time.

Team Repair’s fixing programme is such a cool concept and we cannot wait to see how it develops and what other toys there are to fix!

hello my name is anaise and I'm one of the co-founders of Team repair team repair is a startup that we created as a way of engaging more children with science Technology and Engineering through learning the skill of repair

it's been scientifically proven that Hands-On learning is the best way to engage all types of Learners in an educational environment and that's why we've created kits for schools to help teachers deliver that Hands-On learning experience

How it works
this is how it works we have a range of different gadgets for teachers to choose from which each align with different curriculum topics

a classroom pack will include a set of one of these gadgets which each have a specific fault designed into them for example in our games console kit students will have to figure out how to fix a broken screen and buttons and while they do so they also get to explore how circuits and electricity works

or in our remote control car kit students can fix things like a broken steering system and gearbox whilst learning about things like Wireless Communications speed distance time equations and how game mechanisms work

Educational content
we've designed up to 3 hours of educational content per Gadget this includes the core repair activity itself as well as integrated stem lessons quizzes at the end of the session and lots of bonus challenges

for example we have a windup torch repair where students have to fix a broken handle and Battery when they're done with the repair we encourage students to think about the similarities between winding up the torch and how wind energy is produced

one of the extension activities there is that they can connect the handle to a voltmeter to see how much energy they can produce from Winding it up they can then connect the volt meter to a solar panel to compare the types of energy production

Repair Kit
along with the repair kit comes all the necessary materials this includes one extra repair kit for you to practice on before the session alongside a walkthrough video to take you through the repair it also includes things like instructions for the students lesson plans presentations to show the class worksheets quizzes and FAQs and troubleshooting to help with any tricky Parts along the repair

our goal is to make it as easy for you to deliver the session as possible without any prior knowledge about science or repair

Rental Model
team repair operates a rental model as a way for us to reduce the amount of waste we're creating that means that once your students have completed the repair activity and all the bonus activities we arrange a courier collection to get the classroom pack back to us once we get it back we then rebreak all the gadgets so that they're ready to be used by another school

Results
schools across the country have already used our kits and we've measured a net increase in repair and stem confidence they've been used in all kinds of settings like repair clubs science lessons career days enrichment days you name it

Outro
if you're interested in getting team repair into your school book in a call with us and we can send you a kit to try out for free I look forward to hearing from you and look forward to working together to inspire more students with stem sustainability and repair
